MEETING MINUTES

May 3, 2010

The meeting was called to order at 12:01pm by President Michael Heywood.  The Pledge of Allegiance led by Cecil Birnbaum was followed by a special blessing of the meal by Don Garrick.

31 member delegates, club presidents, board members and guests were in attendance. We enjoyed lunch provided by The Women’s Club of HB.  President Heywood called for a motion to approve April minutes followed with motion to approve the new 2011 board members:  Mike Heywood, President,  June Dugmore, President-Elect, Co-Vice Presidents of Programs Chris & Mike Grisey, Vice President Membership Larry K. Gallup, Secretary Maureen Sloan and Treasurer Jim Sankey.   Council and club information is being emailed along with minutes and update, therefore we STILL need updated and additional and alternate email addresses.  If your neighbor at the June meeting states they didn’t get these minutes- please remind them to give us their email address.  We will also archive minutes, maintain an events calendar and note our milestones on our website. Please send President Mike at michaelheywood@hbvolunteers.org all events you wish to post on our website calendar for the next 12 months: www.hbvolunteers.org.  Treasurer’s Report by Jim Sankey was reviewed.  A motion to accept was made, seconded and passed.  Jim Sankey, Treasurer reported out balance at $1914 even- some still owe dues however.  President Mike shared with us some information on a great book of interest to us by Harriett Weider, former Mayor of HB & Supervisory of OC, while lunch was being set up.  We also celebrated Memorial Day with Poppies on sale and won’t forget to honor veterans’ service.  No other “New Business” was reported.

Judith Sobel, our presenter, spoke about the GIFT OF LIFE program.  As an HB Local, Judith Ann, originally hails from “The Garden State” (NJ), had worked as a teacher here while raising a family.  Back in ’04 after contracting pneumonia doctors discovered she was living with a birth defect in her heart. After a UCLA medical team evaluated the extent of the damage, her physical and psychological status they nominated her a worthy organ donor recipient.  Anyone can donate their organs through DMV organ donor form when renewing their license and save the life of a wonderful person like Judith.  Because of a renewed love of life Judith got very involved with The Gift of Life program and speaks to groups all over. She is also treasurer of HBCC member; American Association of University Women (AAUW) is active in the HB Interfaith Council and another fellow HBCC member Alzheimer’s Family Services Center.  She is also a CA State Ombudsman.  If you want to contact Judith to speak at your group’s meetings or for details on promoting this program please come to our meetings or email her at judithann@socal.rr.com

“60 second updates” included the following information:

Elaine Craft’s return gave us some information on the growing Sts Simon & Jude Choir along with a successful Arbor Day event by the HB Tree Society- see their website for event listings throughout the year, and go to www.surfcity-hb.org and click on Surf City Highlights”.  There you can view many HB Clubs’ events featured on this monthly show.  Segments usually feature the events a month after they take place.  Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley broke ground on the first CLUB in the USA to be built on a college campus.  Please attend their event on Thursday June 10th at Golden West College- and if your club has funds to disburse- write them a check this month and guarantee your organization a TABLE at the Boys & Girls Club Gala this October.  See how a REAL Fundraiser is put on – it’s the largest in the City raising over $400K annually.  Funds are needed now more than ever to service the city’s children.  A Day for Kids event is on June 19th- your club or group may be able to attend, assist and participate there as well.  Reps from 3 club branches were in attendance.  The Soroptimists International of HB will hold workshops in June that are free and open to other HB non-profits- email Maureen for details. Also the new member brunch orientation takes place in June and new Board installation ceremony.  Despite economic hardships Soroptimists raised more money this year than ever before in the club’s 46 years history!  See Dottie Hughes for info on the popular, annual Fishing Derby at Chris Carr Park.
