Meeting Minutes – February 1, 2010
The meeting was called to order at noon by President Mike Heywood. Pledge of Allegiance was followed by a special blessing of the meal by Rev. Mark Currie President of the HB Interfaith Council.
41 member delegates, club presidents and guests were in attendance. We enjoyed a pot-luck style lunch and express special thanks to the hospitality committee. President Heywood asked for a motion to approve the January meeting minutes, motion passed @ 12:20pm. He reminded all members that minutes are emailed and we need updated email addresses to insure their receipt as well as will archive them on the website. A get-well card was passed around to sign to send to ill board member – Elaine Craft. As a long-time member, parliamentarian and past president she has faithfully served the coordinating council for many years. No other “New Business” reported. Treasurer’s Report: Jim Sankey reviewed our current balance; motion to accept made, seconded and passed.

New delegate from HB Playhouse introduced the idea of clubs attending plays as a fundraising event- Gypsy currently playing- please contact for details, Friends of Shipley Nature Center have Spring Festival coming up, Amigos de Bolsa Chica’s ribbon cutting for the new walking bridge along Warner Ave. is March 4th; Huntington Harbour Republican Women’s Club is the LARGEST in the nation! Contact Cjchristiana@verizon.net for membership info.; League of Women Voters to hold City Council candidate debate- date TBA; Girl Scout of OC rep- Karen reported that HB has over 2200 girls involved in scouting. Many need to become more active in the community and may be able to interact with clubs such as Soroptimist, Kiwanis Key Club, etc. please see Karen. Mark Currie of HB Interfaith Council reminded us meetings are the last Thursday of each month at a different houses of worship- brochures were o n the table. Larry Gallup reported on the 2010 census. ?’And can be previewed on the website; also that our HBCC current membership is 44 member organizations & membership is available to new groups at only $15. Per year. Brenda Meeks reports that the HB Women’s Club has a card bingo event 2/20 1130am- their bldg is at 410 10th St., Miss HB Pageant was 2/7 & a Marina HS Senior Cassie C took the title & competes this summer for Miss CA. Willa Sigler CA retired teachers is still providing scholarships to local colleges funded via luncheons held- please contact her to attend & support this cause. Kenny Noe of HB Human Rights Task Force was in attendance. The club was founded by Ralph Bauer & Shirley Dettloff and is affiliated with other groups such as “HB Reads one Book”, “Parent Leadership Institute” and more. Nicole L of the HB Marketing & Visitor’s Bureau reminded all members to also list event via the highly visited surfcityusa website for moiré exposure- free of charge. They are positioning our city as an overnight destination for travelers from the world over. Tourism will improve our quality of life as residents. Karen Jackel of HB tomorrow reported the March 25th event at the Main Library with Fred Wilson City Mgr & Mayor Cathy Green- open to all at 7pm. See Karen for more information or their website. Warren Balfour presented President for Golden West Y’s Men: Marilyn Thorpe. Jim Sankey our treasurer represents Project Self Sufficiency “PSS” the City’s program for single parent households that enables them to get over obstacles and achieve self sufficiency through education- June Graduation upcoming- volunteers always needed for the event. Also Jim & Sue Gordon spoke on behalf of the HB, FV, and Westminster Environmental Education team. A fourth grade program partnering with the Discovery Science Center complete with newsletter and children’s section of www.rainbowdisposal.com website.
Ray Calderman of VFW reported they are looking for new members. If you know of any local vets, please advise them as they are doing so much to make the lives of fellow Veterans in need better. Richard Moore w/HB Reads One Book invited us all to their Feb. 4th film series at the Library through March 11th on: The Lost Boys. Barnes & Noble Booksellers also hosted an event where you could mention “HB Reads….” And a donation would go via sales proceeds; American Association of University Women’s President Julie Westfall let us know about the “wild about literacy” a woman and girls program- meetings are 3rd Saturday @ Meadowlark. GW College Foundation President Jo Andrews was introduced by delegate June Dugmore; on the 3rd Friday of each month they host a fundraising luncheon for scholarships @ only $10. @ HB Community Center. Sloan Gallipeo of Assistance League of HB was kind enough to bring donation receipts for anyone bringing in their clothing & small household item donations. She will do this from now on as they were able to partner with a past program presenter SHIP & are now furnishing their participants with clothing- a great HBCC connection! IN the 60th year, The Assistance League holds their only annual fundraising event April 17 at the Hyatt. Please bring your donations in at any coordinating council meeting and collect from your organizations too please. Soroptimists International of Huntington Beach President Denise Sonnenberg was here for her 2nd Presidents Day visit and reported on the success of the ’09 events. The club is in its 46th year of service to HB & now on facebook & introducing new events open to members and non-members alike in 2010 to benefit women and girls in need.
Dottie Dupont of HB’s Circle of Friends- an active senior club announced that they too are interacting & partnering w/other HB Coordinating Council members such as the Assistance League to help make a positive difference while having fun on day trips and performing auxiliary duties. They plan some fundraising events this year to support nursing scholarships at GWC and need everyone’s help. Judy Ann Morris of C. E. R. T. reminded us that all volunteer groups can take HBFD classes FREE. Such as Disaster Preparedness, First responders help, and plan a Disaster Preparedness Expo this year. Mimi Lozano Holtzman’s online magazine is now monthly, celebrating diversity by understanding history. Her presentation on showing connections not separations is available to any club or group as well.
Nobel Waite is with the LDS Church North Stake and Don Garrick is LDS South Stake- both serving on the HB Interfaith Council and Nobel is a newly appointed water district commissioner. Tom Livengood wants all clubs to know about the Shipley Nature Center’s park Clean Up is coming soon- with encouragement for other organizations to participate. Roy Renaldi delegate & Leonard Gleason President of HB Lions Club have an annual essay student contest for a scholarship prize. This year’s topic is Universal Health Care.” Lions are working w/Family Center for Genealogy for hearing and sight conservation as well as have their successful annual “Crabfest” in March at Old World- tickets sell out every year.
Bea- President of HB Friends of the Library told us about their gift shop, field trip and social events that fund library support. Candace Bartsch delegate & President Don McAllister of HB Council on Aging said their website is now up and will link to HB Coordinating Councils. A “June Gold” fundraiser was announced as well as the continuation of the annual Senior Saturday in September. Senior Center membership is only $10. And we will have 65% additional seniors living in HB by the year 2020. Ed Vickery of Kiwanis was on hand and reminded us that their club meets every Tuesday at Meadowlark for lunch.
Lynda Nelson of HB Mazda (Beach Blvd &\@ Terry Dr- Warner) was a guest who has a Community outreach goal. They want to give away donations in the form of cash to all groups, clubs & non profits that want to use their dealership to hold events. They’ll supply the space, a banner & opportunity drawing funds, if you would like to use their venue on a pre-arranged Sunday as early as noon and as late as 4pm. Examples: Car washes, cookie sales, duck sales, etc. her # is 848-7739
